Philosophy

Kehillath Israel Nursery School seeks to foster the growth of the whole child in every area of development: social, emotional, physical, intellectual, creative, and Judaic. We give children the opportunity to play, grow, develop, and learn in a safe and caring environment.

The children are treated with respect, and in return are asked to be respectful of others. Friendship skills, problem solving, and enhancement of their self-esteem are built into all their daily interactions at school. Most importantly, the school encourages children to pursue their own interests and develop at their own speed.

The children learn the joy of Judaism through both festive and educational activities.

The school facilities are exceptionally well-equipped to provide children with an intellectually stimulating environment. Within this environment the children are given limits, structure, support, and guidance to help them grow and develop.

Curriculum

Children learn by exploring, doing, and practicing. The play space is organized into different activity areas that invite and encourage investigation and discovery in the many areas of the curriculum.

The curriculum is very broad-based. Children participate in drama, art projects, science and discovery, math, problem solving, creative thinking, and whole language activities.

Visiting specialists teach music and creative movement, and special activities are provided to help children develop fine and large motor skills.

Time is provided each day for the children to play in the school's new playground, which is specifically designed for preschoolers.

The program is designed to encourage social and emotional development and to incorporate experiences and activities that focus on the children's particular interests and needs.

Judaic teaching is an intrinsic part of the school's curriculum and is woven into every aspect of the children's experience and learning. The children also learn about Judaism, Shabbat, and holidays through stories, song, and dance.

Toddler Program

For children from 2 years to 2 years 8 months in September

The program is five mornings a week, 9:00 AM to 12 noon each day.

Play is the work of children. The Preschool program encourages children to play and learn in a cooperative environment. Teachers plan activities in all areas of learning while meeting the changing needs of the children.

Transitional Kindergarten

For children who are 5 years of age in September and becoming 5 years of age throughout the school year.

The program is five mornings a week, 9:00 AM to 12 noon each day.

Transitional Kindergarten offers an enhanced whole language program, increased opportunities for problem-solving activities, more involved hands-on science and math projects, and special units based on the children's interests.

The Transitional Kindergarten program meets the needs of older preschoolers who are not eligible to enter kindergarten.

Extended Day

Parents may register their children for any combination or number of days. Enrollment in the early morning program and on Wednesday afternoons, however, is limited to those who sign up for a five day program.

The extended day program focuses on enrichment and socialization, and offers children additional opportunities to play and learn in a warm and inviting environment under the supervision of the school's skilled and capable staff. In addition, there is time for lunch (brought from home), a rest period and outdoor activities.

Each Friday, from 12-2pm is Creative Arts Club in the Lunch Bunch Program.
Children will work on an art project using a variety of materials; including paints, clay, wood and fabric. Participating students will have the opportunity to learn about and experiment with the techniques of famous artists from around the world.

Summer Program

The summer program is offered to children who are 2 years 9 months to 6 years of age in June.

There are two three-week sessions in June and July, Monday through Friday, 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM.

These programs provide both outdoor and indoor fun activities.

Staff

The quality of the school's staff is exceptional and very important to the program. Each class is led by two or three highly qualified teachers with demonstrated abilities, a bachelor's or master's degree, and academic training in early childhood education.

Student teachers and senior citizen volunteers often bring special additional qualities to the classroom.

The Director

Carol Killian, appointed director of the school in 1994, had been a Kehillath Israel Nursery School teacher for the previous ten years and also had been a Kehillath Israel Nursery School parent. Carol served on the steering committee which designed the Judaic Early Childhood accreditation process in Greater Boston and led the school to become the first school accredited by the program.
